Mark Your Calendars: 2025 Trading Holidays Announced

Investors and traders should prepare for the upcoming year's market closures as the major U.S. exchanges have released their official holiday schedules for 2025. The calendar outlines several days when trading will be suspended, with the most significant breaks centered around Christmas and New Year's Day.

Christmas and Year-End Closures

In 2025, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will be closed on Thursday, December 25th, in observance of Christmas Day. As Christmas falls on a Thursday, the markets will operate on a normal schedule for the surrounding days, including Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24th.

For the New Year's holiday, exchanges will be shut on Wednesday, January 1st, 2025. This follows the standard practice of closing for the federal holiday.

Planning for the Holiday Season

Financial professionals advise investors to plan their year-end strategies well in advance of these closures. Trading volumes often thin out in the week between Christmas and New Year's, which can lead to increased volatility. Settlements for trades placed just before a multi-day closure will be delayed until markets reopen.

Bond markets operated by FINRA typically follow a similar holiday schedule, though early closures are sometimes observed on days preceding certain holidays, such as Christmas Eve. Investors are encouraged to confirm specific hours with their brokers as the dates approach.
