EBRD Injects $9.3 Million into North Macedonia's Green Transition Through Sparkasse Bank

European Bank Boosts Green Lending in Southeast Europe
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced a significant financial commitment of $9.3 million to Sparkasse Bank in Skopje, North Macedonia. The funds are being channeled through the EBRD's dedicated Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF), marking a strategic push to accelerate the country's shift toward sustainable energy and climate-resilient practices.
Fueling Local Green Investments
This capital injection is designed to empower Sparkasse Bank to expand its portfolio of green loans. The financing will be made available to local private businesses, homeowners, and property developers seeking to invest in climate mitigation and adaptation technologies. Eligible projects are expected to include renewable energy installations, such as solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, energy efficiency upgrades for residential and commercial buildings, and investments in water-saving and sustainable agricultural technologies.
The facility is part of the broader Western Balkans GEFF, which is supported by grant funding from the European Union and Austria. This structure combines favorable financing with technical assistance and investment incentives, making green technology more accessible and affordable for end-borrowers.
A Strategic Partnership for Sustainability
"This new facility with Sparkasse Bank Skopje underscores our shared commitment to fostering a green economy in North Macedonia," said an EBRD representative. "By providing local businesses and households with the necessary resources, we are helping to reduce carbon emissions, improve resource efficiency, and build long-term environmental and economic resilience."
Sparkasse Bank, a longstanding partner of the EBRD in the region, will leverage its extensive local network to distribute the funds. The bank has previously participated in similar EBRD programs, demonstrating a proven track record in managing dedicated credit lines for sustainable development.
This transaction aligns with the EBRD's strategic goal of making the majority of its annual investments green by 2025. In North Macedonia, the Bank has invested over €2.4 billion to date across more than 150 projects, with a strong focus on supporting the country's green economic agenda.
